Travis Kelce picked as the top tight end in the NFL Top 5 rankings

All the pre-season focus on Travis Kelce as a budding pin-up boy, thanks to his romantic engagement with pop star Taylor Swift last season reflected on his playing skills.

But Kelce still was worth more than enough in his primary role of Patrick Mahomes’ go-to tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs to be named the best of his position by The Associated Press.

Eight members of the AP Pro Football Writers’ panel voted on the ranking of the top five tight ends as they were at the end of the 2023 regular season and heading into the 2024 season. The first-place votes which were twenty-five votes awarded ten points. With a view of determining the audience’s preference, second through fifth place votes attracted 5, 3, 2 and 1 point respectively.

The voting was done and Kelce received six of the eight first places and two second places to clinch the voting. The remaining five voters included George Kittle as the only tight end on their first and second-place list earning him other two first place votes and six second place votes. Following Hockenson was Mark Andrews and Sam LaPorta.

Joining him was also Evan Engram and Trey McBride.

The injury sadly cut short Kelce’s consecutive seasons rush over thousand yardage last season as his knee and ankle sustained injuries in the regular season. Kelce still managed to have been the second-best option for all the tight ends in the league having received 984 yards and made 93 catches.

However, Kelce did get back to his best in the playoffs where he ranked first in receptions per game; catches for 355 yards and three touchdowns that contributed to the chiefs clinching of the lll Super Bowl trophy in five seasons.

Kelce, who turns 34 this season, stands in the top five of all-time tight ends by receptions, yards and scoring with 907, 11,328 and 74, respectively.

4. MARK ANDREWS, Baltimore Ravens

Andrews got only 10 games last season due to a severe ankle injury that set him back. He was a prolific producer prior to getting hurt as he was Jackson’s go-to receiver in Baltimore. Andrews caught 45 balls for 544 yards and six touchdowns in 10 games in the last season.

5. SAM LAPORTA, Detroit Lions

LaPorta had a great rookie season since he was drafted in the second round to Detroit. La Porta received 86 catches, which made it the highest for a rookie tight end in history while providing the rookie tight ends such as Rob Gronkowski and Mike Ditka with at least ten touchdowns.

He is ranked the fifth-best tight end based on his 889 yards receiving last season.
