As it stands, going in to the 2024 college football season, you could probably count the number of programs that merit the label of national championship favorites on one hand. Still leaning on opinion, although an interesting one, is the fact that if just considering the probability of each program to win the national title this season the number of teams could be limited to six. Of all that list of teams, one program rises above the rest more than the others.

According to Fan Duel, these are the teams with the top six odds to win the national title: And some long shots like Georgia at +300, Ohio State at +400, Oregon +800 ,Texas +850, Alabama +1500 and Ole Miss +1500. The Bulldogs are indicated as a favorite and while some may analyze that as due to the fact that they remain one of the most successful programs in the country at the moment and couple that with the devastating fact that they are the team with the best head coach in the sport currently, there is a lot more to that than is meets the eye, lie in the fact that the Bulldogs are arguably the most balanced team in the country.

Before proceeding to the presentation of further questions which are still there for Georgia, let me briefly characterize its current situation. The typical fan would ask you who are the starting corner backs going to be. I’m not sure about the remaining six but Daylen Everette is the returning starter from last year so he should be one and the other one will be between Julian Humphrey and Daniel Harris. There were lots of playing of Harrice and Humphrey last season and when they are on the field, they delivered. Thus while it stays a question, it do not give the impression that the Bulldogs will be short of at that position. Add to that five-star and true freshman Ellis Robinson as someone who could get play time as well. Many choices to consider, many of them are good.

Another query that may occur is Georgia’s receiving corps. The Bulldogs we lost Ladd McConkey, and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint to the NFL offseason both of whom were starters. A new twist has also been added in that what was supposed to be the starting point at X has been suspended from the team indefinitely, more specifically Rara Thomas. Still, there is Dillon Bell who appeared out of nowhere last season can also be slotted into that position until Miami transfer Colbie Young takes that position and there are then so many headset spots for veteran receivers Arian Smith and Dominic Lovett and then a breakout star Anthony Evans had a good string of games towards the end of the 2023 season and London Humphreys – a transfer from Vanderbilt waiting for his turn. As expected, there is a reasonable question with a rather big choice of options and variants to work on.

Apart from those two, there are no other questions. For Georgia, which rejoins the rankings at No. 13, the read option offence has quarterback Carson Beck, who was last year’s SEC passing yards leader, safety Malaki Starks, one of the best defenders in college football, first-round pick material Mykel Williams, a defensive lineman, the Sooners are stacked with NFL talent on the offensive line, Branson Robinson will be fully added to the running back roster soon, the defensive line Very potent squad for head coach Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs indeed.

Alright, let us turn to the other on the list for consideration. Staring with Ohio State, they probably have the second best talent on their side after Georgia but they still have a doubt at the quarterback position. The Buckeyes picked Will Howard from Kansas State after Kyle McCord joined Syracuse university as a transfer student. Ohio State has always been associated with a premier signal-caller, but does the Buckeye faithful get that with Howard? It will be a major strength for them this year when it comes to running but by no means does a great running game alone win you a National Championship, and one has to wonder if Ohio State has that.

Right, mostly thanks to Dan Lanning proving he is a good head coach and what they did in the transfer portal this offseason to throw themselves into this national title talk. However, this past year they lost three defensive backs to the NFL draft, and they’re ranked 54th in passing defense. The Ducks added four transfers this year to help with the workload but the question remains on top of how the program will do in the Big Ten this year.

Besides the four questions the constitutional convention has established four questions for Texas. On the opposite side of the ball, the Longhorns are going to need new talent on the defensive line with Byron Murphy and T’Vondre Sweat departing to the NFL, the secondary ranked 116th in passing defense and it appeared to not get a whole lot better during the spring game, and on offense, AD Mitchell and Xavier Worthy are gone to the NFL. They connected to the portal to get help at all those positions, but will it suffice for them to stay in the higher strata of the sport this year?

Alabama’s question is what does the secondary look like? Arizona defense will benefit from the return of Malachi Moore who is projected to a starter; however, Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry are gone, and Caleb Downs transferred to Ohio State. The Crimson Tide have always had great players here in the secondary but this could be a different ball game this year. Domani Jackson, Keon Sabb could ease that pain, but this team is an injury away from having to call on the freshman class. It is also the first season of Kalen Deboer coaching at Alabama and getting a national in any given year at a particular program is not a walk in the park.

Last but not least, Ole Miss was feeding into the donut hole that is the NCAA transfer portal and picking up every random player they could get their hands on. For the case of Ole Miss, the question other than “Can Lane Kiffin win big games?” will persist to be challenging and that is whether the defense can be a national title one or not. This statement is supported by statistics where one realizes that for a team to be victorious and win a national title, it has to be protected by a defense that has scored among the top 35. Though they only placed 40th in the previous season so perhaps the transfer portal help can push them up 5 more places, but until the Rebels demonstrate it, there is no stock that can be put on it.
