Even before the arrival of the 2024 NFL offseason the Carolina Panthers realized that they needed to overhaul their wide receiver corps which become one of the worst in the league the previous year. It may not be perfect , but this unit looks far more promising on paper coming into this season than it likely did before the beginning of the last season. This they achieved by two major strategic decisions.

First in the beginning of the free agency, they executed a trade for the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson. They then proceeded to trade all the way up to the end of the first round for South Carolina stud Xavier Legette. Combined they should tremendously increase the potential for a unit that has been lagging for a while. But which one of them will be the head of this wide receiver room and be Bryce Young’s go-to guy?

Here is what Jesse takes ESPN is expecting in this wide receiver room come the next season. Below are Mike Clay projections of the top five for Carolina:

Projected targets and job positions of Wide Receivers Panthers 2024

Diontae Johnson: fore targets 117 for catches 72 yards 989 and touchdowns 6

Adam Thielen: 100 aims, 74 receptions, 709 yards, 5 scores

Xavier Legette: That year he achieved 77 targets, 48 catches, 627 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Jonathan Mingo: 49 for target, 28 for catches, 365 for the yards, and 2 for touchdowns.

David Moore: 16 receiving targets, 10 receptions, 122 yards, 1 scoring catch

Interesting stuff. Guess you’d have to believe the Panthers would like it if Legette could do better than Thielen in his rookie season, but you can’t be sure that will happen. While there are sometimes new receivers that have to get familiar with their new quarterback, Johnson looks set to be head and shoulder above his contenders. It remains to be seen if anyone can come up after this.
