What happened to Gerhart, the fifth-round pick out of Purdue, when he seemed to take a bad step after mishandling a kickoff and immediately went down as if in pain? He was admitted to The Hospital for Special Surgery for further investigation and other examinations.
The Giants claimed he had an ankle problem.
Tracy was in a direct rivalry with second-year professional Eric Gray for a position which was now left as the backup to Singletary, the permanent veteran signed to replace Barkley who joined the eagles.
Singletary stood up for Tracy said that he does not like it when he sees Tracy being in pain.
“It cannot only be seen that we invested into this,” Singletary said. That is part and parcel of the game, Sultan says: You can’t really prevent injuries in this game; It is a 100 percent injury game, I don’t know exactly what is happening but we always feel bad when one of our brother goes down.
Since Singletary and other major starters got an early chance to rest, Tracy began the Giants preseason opener against the Detroit Lions and accounted for 26 yards on five rushes.
Singletary said Tracy has a lot of potential and he advised him to work hard.
“Entering the league as a rookie he has been playing like a veteran, I would say he hasn’t been playing like a rookie at all,” Singletary said. “That is why they keep upgrading him to be this second or third-year player when indeed he has been playing like one, though still raw, but he is on the right track. ”
If so, with an injury, Gray could take the backup position, while free agent Dante Miller becomes the backup. Veon Gray in particular had four carries for 52 yards and two touchdowns in the Thursday night’s 14-3 triumph over the Lions. Miller had 63 yards on 12 carries.
“Well, it is what it is,” Singletary said of his team missing Tracy. “In other words, pick up for him. Support him. We just have to keep grinding, keep improving, keep trying to get better. That’s a little bit of what it is. ”
Also, first-round draft pick Malik Nabers was limited to doing the trainer’s workout on the sideline. He hurt his left ankle Sunday while running a pass route in practice and didn’t practice on Monday.
“I’m feeling good,” Nabers said, trying to downplay the seriousness of the injury that could affect him playing time in his rookie season after being drafted No. 6 overall in the draft.
We are not sure if Nabers will play Saturday when the Giants are to face the Texans in Houston. He should be ready for the season opener on Sept. 8 against Minnesota, especially after X-rays and an MRI on the ankle was negative.
New starting guard Jon Runyan Jr. , who signed as a free agent from the Packers, sat out practice because of a sore shoulder. On the offense line, John Michael Schmitz practiced with a shoulder issue, while Evan Neal joined the team practice after emerging from the PUP list this week. Neal was also at tackle working for the second team. Tight end Lawrence Cager is day-to-day with a tweaked groin after impressing in camp following a hamstring problem.
