Dodd Trophy Releases 2024 Preseason Watch List

Today, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. have launched the list of 2024 Dodd Trophy presented by PNC Bank candidates. For the year, the list presents 21 of the nation’s leading college football coaches from all the Power Four conferences and one independent.

Sponsored by Peach Bowl, Inc. , and now, by PNC Bank, The Dodd Trophy represents college footballs’ most prestigious national coaching award that honors the head of the team – the man who achieves excellence on the field and understands the role of scholarship, leadership, and integrity, Petty’s coaching philosophy.

This watch list has been developed through a nomination and voting process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Peach Bowl, Inc. and secondary uses factors that included APR, GSR, commitment to service and charity, among other factors to consider the projected success in the 2024 season.

This excluded first-year coaches with their current teams because they are not eligible to win The Dodd Trophy until their second year with the team.

“The Dodd Trophy remains still to be the most cherished coach of the year award because of what can be referred to as the Dodd difference whereby the coaches are scrutinized in addition to their performance on the field,” stated Jim Terry, the chairman of the Boddy Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. ”This award is not just about winning on the field but it attempts to capture how these coaches are leaders with their student athletes in the classroom and in their communities as well, Hence we only consider coaches and their programs with the highest APRs based on the NCAA formula We also require that any coach nominated has led his or her program for at least two years in order to allow time to set the pace and tone at his or her university. ”

The 2024 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank Preseason Watch List:

Collectively these coaches have the four national championships, 39 FBS conference championships and have garnered 2,135 victories in a coaching career.

From the 21 coaches currently on the list 5 of them are past recipients of The Dodd Trophy this include Dabo Swinney from 2011, Kirk Ferentz from 2015, Brian Kelly from 2018, Kyle Whittingham from 2019 and Mike Norvell from 2023.

Furthermore, two of the competitors for the last year’s award are faced with Mizzou’s Eliah Drinkwitz and the 2023 Dodd Trophy winner Mike Norvell, the head coach of Florida State.

When it comes to the list of coaches, ACC and SEC are on top of all the conferences, has six coaches enlisted while the Big12 and the BigTen and have four each.

An interim shortlist, expanding or trimming it, will be issued in the fall out midseason. Ten spot award winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will select the final nominee list after the 2024 season. The 2024 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank Award will be awarded in Atlanta during the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Games week.

Coaches of the teams having success on the playing field the previous week will be also be recognized from September on a weekly basis, as will the Dodd Coach of the Week, but the winning program has to represent the award’s principles of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
