This injury is different from the hamstring problem that troubled Legette in the OTAs, earlier in the offseason.
“It’s something in his lower leg,” Canales said, to Joe Person of The Athletic. “I do not want to go into it much, but we are just going to assess him this afternoon as a precautionary measure and then we shall be in a position to advise an further course of action. The information you need will be provided to you by me. ”
For Legette, Carolina chose him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the pick 32nd pick, he gives new quarterback Bryce Young a promising training camp with the assumption that he will be his go-to-guy in this season. This Cuban born footballer made his last season with the Gamecocks yeilding 71 receptions for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns. The Panthers really liked Legette and were active in the draft to get him, making a trade to move up one pick and into the first round to get him.
Xavier Legette to arrive on the practice squad in training camp
Legette said last week he “was slow to open” camp but Canales added Legette and other rookies “had to prove themselves. ”
“Oh, well, not really behind, I guess,” Canales said. “It’s just a matter of I hope the guys on our team would do more, they would fight to get those valuable reps and he is getting a lot of reps. Again for all the young guys out there, let me tell you this; show us. Prove to God that you’re trying hard. Prove to us that you are doing all these the right way so that we can come in with the confidence and trust.
“So, it’s not a knock on him for not doing those things It’s like ‘keep on doing this, keep on being this way, keep on doing what you want to do. ’”
Young on his part said that he was looking forward to coaching a receiver with the talent and size as that of Legette.
“That combination of size, speed, how explosive he is, the way he comes out of routes it’s definitely something that I gotta get used to,” Young said. “As for that timing, we are yet to perfect it, but I am excited, yes I am. ”
